Labour pledges to never bring back freedom of movement (and why that might make me vote for Satan)
I desperately would like to see a more socialist "fairer for all" government. I believe in an ever-shrinking, ever more interconnected world, that that also inevitably means we need to be inside the EU. EU citizens are our neighbours, our friends and our loved ones. A democracy that does not extend its democracy to our neighbours is not really very democratic in my eyes.
Labour pledges to never bring back freedom of movement
I now am beginning to think that due to the utter hopelessness of an ineffective Labour party the greatest chance of realising that ambition is to vote Tory!
Why? Because Labour are so utterly clueless and so utterly lacking in leadership and direction (they actually voted down PR at the conference, despite members overwhelmingly voting for it) that Labour now only serve to keep the Tory party in power.
Labour are too weak to win and too big to let another party try.
We need an entirely new left of centre, 21st-century savvy party. One not emasculated by block voting unions. And if Labour will not recognise this and split into old school Absolute sovereignty Corbynistas and 21st century genuinely pro EU party, then they will forever remain the party of utter uselessness.
It is possible but increasingly unlikely that Labour will get into power, Labour will only get into power by dint of the Tories hurting enough of their core voters that they will stop voting for them. Labour as they are now, will not get into power by any of their own misguided vote chasing efforts. But without a clear manifesto that commits to undoing the mess of Brexit and also accepting PR, the inevitable economic catastrophe that they will inherit will no, indeed cannot, be fixed by their half-arsed policies. So, Labour will at best be a single term party that will achieve no more than handing back power to the Tories.
I need a party that will kill the Tories stone dead, rather than just keep them out of power for a single term. The best party to achieve that is the Tories.
So unless we see a real left of centre party that accepts that problems of Brexit must be addressed with solid commitments (*), then voting Tory will see a genuine catastrophic running of the UK into the ground and then, just perhaps, a new part may emerge from the ashes that is capable of clear direction. Maybe once the poverty and pain are felt by the many, will the many see that greed and xenophobia was never the solution to the countries problems.
(*) Manifest must include:
- Proportional Representation
- Single Market
- Freedom of Movement Restored
- Accepting EU Level Playing Field Terms and Conditions
Note: We are not currently able to fully rejoining the EU as voting members until the UK truly feels itself pro EU by a sufficient supermajority that would never again send a significant number of UKIP MEPs to Brussels. Whilst we are a nation still so divided, the EU simply would deny our rejoining.
It will take a reeducation of the country to undo the misinformation that has poisoned so many with so much anti-EU feeling.
